Veganism has been around for years. However, today, the population of vegans is at its highest yet. As science has progressed, there have been more and more discoveries of the health benefits of veganism on the human body and the planet. Numerous vegan documentaries are all over Netflix, which are very educational.

We will discover why veganism is healthy and why it is increasing. We will look at the popularity of veganism in the UK.

We are all aware of veganism, and it’s slowly taking over the food industry. We know restaurants are increasing their vegan option range, such as Aldi. Out of all the counties, the Uk has the largest vegan population because “Searches for vegan restaurants with dedicated vegan menus have tripled in the past four years.” (worldpopulationreview, 2023). This means more and more people who are interested in vegan food are increasing.

It isn’t just the general public jumping on the vegan bandwagon. There has also been an increase in vegan celebrities. Documentaries such as ‘What the Health’ which inspired Lewis Hamilton to become vegan.

The vegan population growth is on the rise because we are learning about how bad it is for the environment for humans to consume meat. Vegan adverts are very much in the mainstream as well, which is helping to encourage more people to try vegan food and helping to increase the vegan population growth.

Many vegan books are being published that are also great inspirations for people. A tremendous vegan book to check out is the REBEL VEGAN LIFE: A Radical Take On Veganism For A Brave New World: How to Transform Your Health & Protect The Environment With a Cruelty-Free, Plant-Based Diet (REBEL VEGAN BOOK SERIES). Another good book to check out is ‘How Not to Die’ by Michael Gregor (link above). This book taught me the importance of veganism and what happens to the body when you eat healthy vegan food. It helped me to keep track of what foods I need to include in my diet; for example, I have learnt that broccoli can help repair your body from passive smoking, so I try to include as much broccoli in my diet as possible as I live with a smoker.

The book talks in depth about the experiments that prove the idea that meat does more harm than good to the human body. It’s truly an educational book.

Veganism is now so limitless; many years ago, there weren’t many vegan alternatives, making it very difficult for people to be vegan. However, for any meal you desire, there is a vegan option for you. You can create these recipes at home with the book ‘Anything you can cook, I can cook vegan’ (link above). The book is about having non-vegan recipes and turning them into completely vegan dishes. It tells you what ingredients you need and a step-by-step guide on making these recipes so you don’t have to miss out on your fried eggs in the morning and still be vegan.

  • The first country with the most vegan population growth country is the UK. There are over 200,000 searches a month for veganism in the UK. As I live in the UK, I see plenty of vegan adverts and signs advertising new vegan products daily, so it is a huge hit here in the UK.
  • Australia has the second-biggest vegan population growth; just like the UK, more people are searching for vegan products in Australia. The reasoning behind this may be influenced by the concern for climate change and the meat industry’s environmental impact.
  • Israel is next on the list. “Nearly 5% of all Israel citizens identify as vegan and will only eat vegan food” (worldpopulationreview, 2023). In Israel, there is a lot of Meditarrannium foods which means there is a lot of produce to make vegan recipes so it is easy to be vegan in Israel. This is great news for the environment.
  • The fourth country on the list is New Zealand. In New Zealand, “nearly 15% of the population admitted to eating a meat-free diet” (worldpopulationreview, 2023). Just like in the UK, there has been a growth in veganism being googled and more people searching for vegan restaurants.
  • Next up is Switzerland. They are number one europeans with the most vegans. In “a recent survey found that nearly ⅓ of all Swiss people were actively attempting to reduce their meat consumption” (worldpopulationreview, 2023).
  • Tied at number six is Austria and Germany. These two countries have the same amout of vegan population currently and also has one of the fastest growth we have seen yet. “Germany already had a leading amount of vegetarians, but many of these citizens have started to transform to veganism” (worldpopulationreview, 2023).
  • Sweden is at number seven. The Sweds are very health concious people so veganism is definitly a popular option in Sweden.

So that completes the list of the countries with the highest vegan population. I hope this list will one day continue to grow.

In the market there are over 65,000 vegan products from 2,500 different countries. These numbers are constantly rising as the increase of veganism is growing. These numbers mean that there is a growing interest in the vegan diet. This because more celebrities and influencers are switching to veganism. There is an appeal of weight loss and a huge range of health benefits that people are interested in which is why more and more people are searching about veganism. If you are interested in learning about what are the benefits of the nutrition in a vegan diet then I would recommend the ‘Vegan Savvy: The expert’s guide to nutrition on a plant-based diet’ book. It’s a great guide on how to switch to a vegan diet without compramising your health so you don’t need to worry about if it will make you ill when you transition. 

Another great weightloss book that I do recommend is Weight Loss the Vegan Way: 21-Day Meal Plan with Over 75 Easy Recipes. You can use this book to plan your recipes so you don’t have to feel stuck on what to make that is healthy and vegan.

My favourite weightloss tip is adding Acai juice to your diet. Acai juice is a superfood that is great for weightloss and it helps to boost your immune system. I like to make acai smootie bowls for breakfast. Just go easy on any kind of fruit juice as they are very high in sugar.

There are documentaries about veganism that are on main-stream platforms to help people learn more about veganism. Also, it is known that veganism helps with climate change and that has peaked interest in people because of the climate crisis that we are currently dealing with and people would like to do their part to help. The veganism in the US is growing just like the rest of the world. However, there is only three percent of vegans in America. Hopefully one day there will be a bigger vegan population in America. It’s unfortuante that the USA hasn’t got the biggest vegan population as America is one of the most influencial countries in the world so if they became vegan positive then the rest of the world will definitely increase dramatically as they would want to follow Americas influence.
